BRIEF DESCRIPTION :

Chemical emergencies can occur in a number of different situations where hazardous chemicals are released into the surroundings. Hazardous chemicals can either be chemical weapons or toxic industrial chemicals.

These threats can occur as a result of an act of terrorism or an industrial accident. Both situations can be very challenging to manage. Preparedness by training, drills, implementation of policies and standard operating procedures are vital for any country or organization to manage efficiently a chemical emergency. A multiagency approach with good cooperation and teamwork is essential.

Hazardous material (hazmat) management is an important component of any chemical threat management. Hazardous material can be any xenobiotic (solid, liquid or gas) with the potential to harm. The initial approach to the management of such hazards must be handled appropriately to prevent further casualties.

In this workshop, experts in disaster management, fire and rescue services (hazmat), chemical weapons as well as the emergency medical response team will share their experience on chemical emergencies.

Synopsis:

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT :

Methanol, also known as “wood alcohol”, is a commonly used organic solvent with hundreds of uses – mainly as an industrial, chemical feedstock for propylene, resins, glues and polymers, but also as a clean-burning fuel for land and sea transportation, industrial boilers, cookstoves, ceramic kilns and tea/tobacco dryers.  Methanol is a clear, odorless liquid at room temperature and is miscible in water.

However, if ingested, the human body begins to break down methanol, resulting in formaldehyde, formic acid, and formate, which is toxic, causing metabolic acidosis, neurological disorders, and even death, if not treated in time.

It is a commonly found ingredient of poorly adulterated, “bootleg” alcoholic beverages in many countries. Methanol toxicity or “poisoning”, remains a common problem in many parts of the developing world, especially among members of lower socioeconomic classes.

In this workshop, experts in the treatment of methanol poisoning, as a result of ingesting “bootleg” alcohol, will share their experience and advice for diagnosing and treatment of methanol poisoning.

PROFESSOR SIMON THOMAS
Synopsis:

BRIEF DESCRIPTION ON THE EVENTS :

The Asia Pacific Association of Medical Toxicology (APAMT) is an international association established by a group of medical toxicologists in 1989 to promote all aspects of chemical safety, poison control and treatment within the Asia Pacific region. APAMT has been able to achieve much of its objectives through sharing poison information, investigative research and collaborating with governmental organisations, professional bodies, individuals and academic institutions.

The Annual International Scientific Congress is an important event for the association. The assembly is a platform for clinicians, toxicologists, poison specialists, and researchers to engage and share new experiences, development and controversies in toxicology. Since 1992, APAMT has conducted its yearly congress in various countries in the Asia Pacific including Dubai in the UAE. Malaysia has been granted the privilege to organise and host APAMT 2019, an honour it has already enjoyed on two previous occasions in 2001 and 2011.

The organising of APAMT 2019 is a joint effort of APAMT, the Malaysia National Poison Centre (Universiti Sains Malaysia) and the Malaysian Society on Toxinology and College of Emergency Physicians (Malaysia Academy of Medicine). The congress, scheduled for 5-7 November 2019 will kick-off with three Pre-Congress Workshops on 4 November. The entire proceedings of APAMT 2019 will be wholly conducted at The Everly Putrajaya, a modern 4-star hotel.

The chosen theme for APAMT 2019, “Facing Challenges in Toxicology: Fusing Technology and People” is deemed appropriate and well timed in the current medical technological era. The congress will reflect on new approaches, future trends and challenges in medical toxicology especially in the Asia Pacific region through scholarly discussions and presentations.

Broadly, the congress scientific programme will also include other important aspects of toxicology such as natural toxins, pesticide poisonings, medical management of poisoning, analytical toxicology, risk assessment, mental health and poisoning, drugs (dose to poison) and, environmental & occupational hazards and risks assessment.

I am inviting you to browse through the conference website for more information on the congress: Scientific program, Speakers, Registration details, Abstract submission, Fees, Conference venue, Accommodation and other related details.

As in all its previous assemblies, APAMT 2019 promises to inspire, uplift and enrich its audience. Do mark the dates of the congress in your calendar. My fellow organisers and I are looking forward to welcoming you to APAMT 2019 in Putrajaya this November.

Best wishes

Synopsis:

Introduction

This course teaches the participants the basic principle of resuscitating a collapse victim. The knowledge of Basic Life Support (BLS) is important to everyone since anyone can died suddenly because of various causes such as heart attack, chocking or having massive stroke.

This incident can occur anywhere and most of the time without any warning. It can happen to your loved one, relative, colleague or even passerby. When these things happen, immediate aid should be given to them within the first four minutes of the incident if we want to save them. This is because any delay in rendering help to these victims will result in unsalvageable condition.

About the course

This course is run over half day. This course is for healthcare providers who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

It involves interactive lectures, demonstration, practical hands-on, videos and assessment. It is conducted by a group of professionals made up of doctors, paramedics and nurses. All of them have a vast experience in teaching and training of basic life support. They work full time in Emergency Department in which these skills of basic life support are a daily requirement for the job.

Learning objective:

To learn normal ultrasound anatomy and scanning techniques for the chosen module.

Participants under supervision of the sonographer will learn the scan techniques and identify normal anatomy either on live models or phantoms.

Abdominal phantom

Pathologies shown are liver cyst, liver tumours, gallstones, bile duct stones, kidney stones etc.

Pelvis female phantom

Pathologies shown are uterine fibroid, dermoid cyst, ectopic pregnancy, blood in Pouch of Douglas and endometrial cancer.

Acute abdomen / FAST phantom

Pathologies shown are acute cholecystitis, aneurysm, acute appendicitis and diverticulitis as well as free fluid or bleeding in perihepatic,  perisplenic, pelvis and pericardium.

Ante-natal phantom

A 23-week fetus is provided where participants will be able to scan and learn the correct techniques for fetal growth assessment.

Training dates:

Dates will be opened in batches.

There are 3 training dates per month (please call to get the nearest dates).

What the participants will get:

1.       Manual on technique & pathology – available both in print and online

2.       Access to Online Library of cases https://www.drrahmanultrasound.com/

3.       Free consultation with Radiologist whenever problem arises

4.       Discounted rates to repeat the workshop

How is our course difference from others?

1.       We are committed to maintain small groups of 2-3 participants only to allow  maximum hands-on opportunities.

2.       In addition to live model, we also use phantoms. Each phantom has an array of pathologies that the participants may scan and elicit the findings.

3.       NR is GP-based (as opposed to hospital based). As such, the kinds of pathologies that we see are much more relevant to GP practice.

4.       Each module will be conducted in 2 phases – workshop first followed by lecture sometimes later. In between, the participants may start scanning in their own practice. If they face any problems or uncertainties, they may bring   them up when we meet for the lecture.

Title: RCPE Neurology Symposium- Tuesday 5 Nov
CPD Points: 5
Location: Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia
Time: 17:00/00:30
Date: 2019-11-05 until 2019-11-06
Organizer: Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia
Email: [email protected]
Speakers: A.P. Dr Amgad Riad
Synopsis:

Neurology practice has evolved at a remarkable and exciting pace over the last two decades, driven by the advances of genetic technologies and paralleled by a similar progress in therapeutics. As a jobbing neurologist, it is challenging to keep abreast with all the advances made within the various neurology subspecialties. Our programme reflects, in a microcosm, the diversity of Neurology and its inherent complexity.

In this symposium we discuss common mundane neurological topics (stroke, headache, epilepsy, dementia). We hear an update on the management of these disorders with emphasis on available new drugs. We also discuss less commonly encountered entities such as autoimmune encephalitis and myasthenia gravis.

Our keynote speaker will discuss diverse gene therapies, which are being researched and applied across various genetic neurological disorders. These therapies will be a significant game-changer in the management of degenerative and genetic neurological disorders. In the future we may be in a position where we can offer patients these treatments to prevent the manifestation of a gene-driven disease rather than simply aiming to stabilise a condition.

Our final session is dedicated to functional neurological disorders (FND) – how to recognise, diagnose and manage FND. FND is a common problem in the neurology clinic. Two lectures on physical and psychological treatment will highlight how new transparent and multidisciplinary approaches to treatment have emerged in recent years for these disabling conditions.

The symposium is aimed at students, doctors in training, GPs, general physicians and neurologists. We hope that the audience will find all sessions of interest and thought-provoking, and that the programme will stimulate discussion even beyond the day of the symposium.

CPD Points: 5

Speakers: Dr Martin Brendan Davies
Professor Dr Craig Ritchie
Professor Jon Stone
